The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 1966

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Italian: Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo) is a 1966 Italian epic spaghetti Western directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach in the title roles. The screenplay was by Age & Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni and Leone, from a story by Vincenzoni and Leone. The widescreen cinematography was by Tonino Delli Colli, and Ennio Morricone composed the film score. The film was the third and final entry in Leone's popular "Dollars" trilogy, following A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965). The Tagline for the film was "For Three Men The Civil War Wasn't Hell. It Was Practice!"

Below: An original Variety Trade Ad for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Below: Here’s an ad with a couple of interesting points. Firstly, it is obviously a 1970s re-issue due to the U/A logo style, secondly – I don’t recall ever seeing that particular tagline ever used before – ‘The Greed, violence, deceit and desires of…’ – and lastly, even by the 70s U/A still manages to use a picture of Clint with the prostitute (played by Silvana Bacci) which has never actually been in a theatrical release print…

Original Reviews
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)
Alternate Titles: Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo
Title: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Running Time: 161 Minutes
In the last and the best installment of his so-called "Dollars" trilogy of Sergio Leone-directed "spaghetti westerns," Clint Eastwood reprised the role of a taciturn, enigmatic loner.
Here he searches for a cache of stolen gold against rivals the Bad (Lee Van Cleef), a ruthless bounty hunter, and the Ugly (Eli Wallach), a Mexican bandit. Though dubbed "the Good," Eastwood's character is not much better than his opponents -- he is just smarter and shoots faster.
The film's title reveals its ironic attitude toward the canonized heroes of the classical western. "The real West was the world of violence, fear, and brutal instincts," claimed Leone. "In pursuit of profit there is no such thing as good and evil, generosity or deviousness; everything depends on chance, and not the best wins but the luckiest." Immensely entertaining and beautifully shot in Techniscope by Tonino Delli Colli, the movie is a virtually definitive "spaghetti western," rivaled only by Leone's own Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).
The main musical theme by Ennio Morricone hit #1 on the British pop charts.
Originally released in Italy at 177 minutes, the movie was later cut for its international release Yuri German, All Movie Guide

Since the first time I seen this movie, I have been hooked! I wasn't even a big western fan when I first seen it but it has become my all-time favorite movie.. Over the years have collected the various merchandise on the film, books-CD's-Posters/Lobby Cards and Comics, the media formats- Video-Laser-DVD-2 DVD Set-Blu-ray. Just can't get enough of this masterpiece on film! I Wonder when the 12in GBU figures will be released?

The lobby card which you list as a mystery (Clint lying on the ground and Van Cleef bending down like he is getting on the ground too with their horses in the background)is no doubt rather odd. Yes it's not in the cut down original US release (United Artists demanded the film be cut down for the US release as the suites thought it too long and they wanted to start it over every two hours in theaters) or is this shot in the longer Italian version released in 1966 in Rome which now has been released in the US and in English so we in the US can now see the film as the Italians (and other Europeans) have since the 1960's. So what is the shot? What I find most amazing is it somehow got put in the rotation of scenes from the movie because it is NOT from a scene in the film!!!! This is a picture taken of Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef during a LUNCH BREAK during filming!!! If one looks carefully, you can see their food. Clint's looks like a sandwich and Lee is close to putting a bit of food in his mouth as he is getting on the ground to join Clint for a lunch break.
