Clint Eastwood Photo Opportunity #17

Here’s something rather wonderful. It was one of our UK correspondents (and great friend) Davy Triumph who first brought this photo to my attention earlier this month. I would of loved to have posted it back then, but the truth is - it was totally obliterated with watermarks. The result being – it was a major distraction and totally destroyed the actual image. Davy (being Davy), took one for the team on this occasion and actually ended up buying the photo from the States - in order to get it saved, here on the Archive in a clean (watermark free) state.
The photo is an incredibly rare one. Clint is seen in the top half of his High Plains Drifter garb, matched up only with a pair of white Tennis shorts! Gun in one hand, Tennis racket in the other, it’s clear that the mood is relaxed. With the lack of beard we’ve made an educated guess that this was taken in advance of filming, perhaps at pre-production stages. The lack of beard could also indicate that it was arguably taken during the same photo session which subsequently resulted in the cover photo used for Iain Johnstone’s book The Man with No Name (1981).
In fact, what we do know, (thanks to the original cutting on the reverse) is that it was used for publicity purposes and to tie in with KMSP-CH9’s ‘Squint like Clint’ TV season - a week long run of Clint’s movies which was beginning here with A Fistful of Dollars.
I can’t really offer any logical explanation as to why they decided to use a candid High Plains Drifter photo; perhaps they were simply more taken by the unusual, comedic aspect of the photo? I guess we’ll never really know. However, I’m sure we’re all certainly grateful that they did!
Thanks again Davy!

Photo Opportunity #42

Photo Opportunity #42

For our October’s Photo Opportunity, I’ve gone right back to the early Rawhide period when Clint was starring as Rowdy Yates on the CBS television western. This photo was taken during a long photo shoot on November 11th, 1961 in Los Angeles, CA. There was a more common used shot from this photo session where Clint has the pinstripe jacket (seen on the left) slung casually over his shoulder. There was also a change of clothing (to a white shirt) which resulted in another commonly seen shot with Clint leaning against a tree trunk. That shot would later be used as a UK picture sleeve for the 7” single release, Rowdy.

However, the shot below is a seldomly seen alternative photo from the session.

Clint 1955-63 Time off with Maggie, with Friends and at Home...

Here's a nice area I wanted to get up and running. It focuses on the more private side of Clint, between the approximate years of 1955 to 1963. Naturally, between this time Clint was also making Rawhide, up until 1966 in fact. But I have purposely tried to stay away from Rawhide in this particular section as I would like to make a dedicated area for all things Rawhide in the future. This section is dedicated to the time spent with Maggie, his home life and the vacations spent together between shooting schedules. It was also a period of the movie 'bit parts' in terms of Clint's career, which again, I have tried to steer clear from as I will probably create a dedicated section to include all film parts between Revenge of the Creature (1955) and Lafayette Escadrille (1958)
This particular section created itself actually. On reflection and through the years of collecting, it's quite amazing just how many images from this fun period began to surface and as a result, provides a rather unique and fascinating look at these early graduating years...

Opening this section, here's a really nice collection of Clint and his then wife Maggie, together in the Eastwood household..

Below: This was also a period where Clint actually ventured into a singing career!

Below: Clint had always been into music from an early age, a great shot of Clint relaxing at home and catching up on some of his favourite albums, taken October 1st 1959.

Below: Pets have always been a feature of Clint's home life

Below: 4 Wonderful photos of Clint and Maggie Eastwood taking the bikes for a spin!

Below: Here's 3 nice pictures of both Clint and Maggie enjoying a trip to San Francisco

Below: Some great colour shots of Clint relaxing at home

Below: Clint in the pool at home Oct 25th 1962

Below: A few great photos from those 'great sweater' days!

Below: From digging them to enjoying them! Clint now had the chance to enjoy his own pool rather then digging them for someone else.

Below: Clint at the Pool again, but does anyone know the name of the girl?

Below: Clint enjoying some Holiday time

Below: 2 studio portrait shots, probably for Universal and circa 1956

Below: A nice collection of photos, these are from 1956, June 1st 1956 in fact. It appears that Clint is seen wearing the same sweater in both the above and below picture. Which could date the above photo also as June 1st. It's not unrealistic to assume that these were all taken by the Universal publicity department on the same photo shoot.

Below: A couple of shots of Clint and Maggie out for an evening, the first was taken during their wedding anniversary and below that, a photo taken with entertainer Johnny Mathis.

Below: Not sure of the story behind this photo featuring Clint and Maggie? Clint has won something, but the event remains a mystery, any ideas anyone?

Below: A rare collection of photos featuring Clint and Eric Fleming while on a fishing trip in 1963

Below: Some nice publicity shots, the first colour photo is from 1960 while the 2 bw photos were taken the following year.

Below: Another Publicity photo taken in the early 1960's. There are a few variations that have been used from this photo shoot, including the one used below for Clint's record sleeve.
