Rare UK Eastwood / Siegel Double-bill quad poster

Rare UK Eastwood / Siegel Double-bill quad poster

It was one of my admin team, Davy Triumph who sent me a photo today of a rare UK quad poster. The poster was not for a nationwide release, instead the poster clearly indicated it was for one day only. These posters were not afforded a full artwork design and instead often featured a bold, text only design which was probably printed off by a local printer in whatever town was screening the programme.

These two-tone posters (30” x 40”), whilst simple in their design, still retain a certain retro charm. They continue to be popular among collectors, simply because they’re a real throwback to a certain time. Of course, when these posters featured a couple of classic movies from one of the world’s most popular stars, the interest and demand naturally increases. The poster is also pretty unique as it clearly displays an error. Two Mules for Sister Sara seems to be wrongly certified with an AA certificate, instead of the correct A certificate.

So, when I received a photo of this Eastwood / Siegel Double-bill quad my eyes lit up. I’d never seen this one before, and features a showing of The Beguiled (1971) teamed up with Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970). It’s believed that this poster dates from 1975. Both The Beguiled and Two Mules for Sister Sara were Universal movies, and were perhaps screened to drum up some interest and advance publicity for Clint’s forthcoming film, The Eiger Sanction (1975) released in the UK in August of the same year. It would also be Eastwood’s last film for Universal Pictures before taking up a semi-permanent residence at Warner Brothers. Eastwood eventually returned to Universal for Changeling (2008).

It was good to see this poster, so I decided to give it a bit of a polish and clean and digitally restore it to some degree. For the purists, I’ve also included the original photo alongside the newly restored version – Just to illustrate how it was likely to look when it first rolled off the printer – some 48 years ago.

My kind thanks to Davy Triumph and the lucky owner who kindly shared this image.
